Molecular gas in spiral galaxies: a new warm phase at large galactocentric distances?

چکیده

There is now strong evidence suggesting that the CO J=1–0 transition, widely used to trace H2 gas, significantly underestimates its mass in metal-poor regions. In spiral disks such regions are found in large galactocentric distances where we show that any unaccounted H2 gas phase is likely to be diffuse (n ∼ 5− 20 cm−3) and warmer (Tkin ∼ 50− 100 K) than the cool (Tkin ∼ 15− 20 K) CO-luminous one. Moreover we find that a high value of the H2 formation rate on grains, suggested by recent observational work, can compensate for the reduction of the available grain surface in the metal-poor part of typical galactic disks and thus enhance this CO-poor H2 component which may be contributing significantly to the mass and pressure of spiral disks beyond their optical radius. A molecular gas phase in the Cold Neutral Medium ?

I examine the possibility that the Cold Neutral Medium of the interstellar medium in galaxies contains a molecular gas phase that may represent a significant and even the dominant amount of its mass in metal-poor regions. In spiral galaxies such regions are found at large galactocentric distances where diffuse H2 gas will be untraceable through its feeble 12CO J=1–0 emission, the very lack of i...

Magnetic fields and the dynamics of spiral galaxies

We investigate the dynamics of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies by performing 3D Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of galactic discs subject to a spiral potential using cold gas, warm gas and a two phase mixture of both. Recent hydrodynamic simulations have demonstrated the formation of inter-arm spurs as well as spiral arm molecular clouds provided the ISM model includes a cold HI phase...

Radio Jet - blown Neutral Hydrogen Supershells in Spiral Galaxies ?

Taking a clue from the pair of HI supershells found in the Scd galaxy NGC 3556 (M 108), we propose a new mechanism for the origin of HI supershells in gas-rich massive galaxies. In this scenario, the two supershells were inflated out of the neutral hydrogen disk due to the localised flaring of a pair of radio lobes formed by the jets ejected from the nucleus during an active phase about ∼ 107 y...

Radial transport of dust in spiral galaxies

Motivated by recent observations which detect dust at large galactocentric distances in the disks of spiral galaxies, we propose a mechanism of outward radial transport of dust by spiral stellar density waves. We consider spiral galaxies in which most of dust formation is localized inside the corotation radius. We show that in the disks of such spiral galaxies, the dust grains can travel over r...

Warm-Dense Molecular Gas in the ISM of Starbursts, LIRGs and ULIRGs

The role of star formation in luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, LIR 10 L ; ULIRGs, LIR 10 L ) is a hotly debated issue: while it is clear that starbursts play a large role in powering the IR luminosity in these galaxies, the relative importance of possible enshrouded AGNs is unknown. It is therefore important to better understand the role of star-forming gas in contributing t...
